Bicycle Safety Guidelines
There is no foolproof way to avoid a bicycle accident from ever happening to you or your loved one. However, there are some “rules to live by” for bicycle safety, which could help prevent a serious accident in the future:
- Wear a bike helmet. One out of seven children under age 15 suffers a head injury if they get into a bike crash. A bike helmet significantly reduces the risk of this kind of severe injury.
- Make sure that your bike and your child’s bike are the right size. Your child should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground.
- Young children should use bikes with coaster brakes -- the kind that will slow and stop the bicycle when the rider pedals backwards. Before using hand brakes, a child’s hands should be large enough and strong enough to use the levers.
- Avoid riding at night, whenever possible. Make sure your bike has reflectors.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Never ride out into a street without stopping first.
- Use the proper hand signals for turning or stopping.
- Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
- Wear brightly colored clothing so that motorists can easily see you.
- Ride on bike paths wherever possible.
